The Winner of Károly Hemző Prize in 2016: Balázs Mohai – It’s nice to be together

It has become a tradition, that the Mai Manó House and the Hemző Károly Foundation organise every year the exhibition of the Hemző Prize winner of the previous year. In 2016, the prize was awarded to Balázs Mohai for his photo series “It’s Nice To Be Together”. A selection from this work is presented at the Bookshop Gallery of the Mai Manó House. The exhibition’s curator is photo historian Klára Szarka.

„Alexandra Szabó and Tamás Juhász –they are people with Down syndrome. They joined each other a couple of years ago, meaning that they are together round the clock, since they always stand by each other in order to help each other. They can live together almost independently.” (Balázs Mohai)

Professional CV

He was born in 1984 in Budapest.  He studied photojournalism and photo editing at the Kaposvár University, then he got a scholarship for the Photo for Media course at the Volda University College in Norway. He was a trainee at the Historical Photo Department of the Hungarian National Museum and later at the photo editorial room of the Hungarian News Agency MTI. He has been working as a freelance photojournalist for the Hungarian News Agency since 2008. He has been making classical photo reports and he is mainly interested in documentary photography in his work. He has been looking for stories in both Hungary and abroad. He was awarded the Junior Prima Prize and 11 prizes at the Hungarian Press Photo Contests, including the Special Prize for the Best Photojournalist Under 30.  He is a member of the Pictorial Collective. He was awarded the Károly Hemző Prize in 2016.
