It is high time to learn the name of Vojvodina photographer/photojournalist Anna Lazukics. She was the one photographer who documented events around her in the tradition of humanistic photography for decades, within just a reach from Hungary both in the sense of space and time. Working in Vojvodina and the areas of former Yugoslavia, she was the only woman to choose photojournalism as her profession, defying the customs of the late 1950’s. Her talent and perseverance earned her the right to have her photographs featured on the pages of Magyar Szó (lit. Hungarian Word, the Hungarian-language daily) and its youth section Képes Ifjúság (Pictured Youth) for decades.

The current exhibition is a selection from her oeuvre. Exhibited photographs offer a glimpse at living in Yugoslavia between 1954 and 1989. We see quotidian, special moments of urban existence as well as of the natural life of people living in villages. Anna Lazukics’s photos taken with great empathy and exceptional sensitivity remind us of the past of our parents, or even of ours.
